Cycling along the Nieuwkoopse Plassen

The old peat area around Nieuwkoop is perfect for long bike rides. You can enjoy the tranquility in this typical Dutch mosaic of large ponds, meandering rivers and elongated meadows. The Nieuwkoopse Plassen are one of the last extensive low moor areas that the Netherlands ever had. Marshes, hay meadows, flowery meadows, reed beds - and a striking silence by Randstad standards. You also cycle along the Langeraarsche Plassen, which were created in the sixteenth century by peat extraction. It is wonderful to pedal along the rivers De Amstel and De Kromme Mijdrecht. From the dike you have beautiful views over the water and the picturesque polders.
