Discover the secrets of the Bulb Region! The picturesque Kaageiland is located in the middle of the Kagerplassen, with many terraces on the water. On an island in Joppe you will find Brasserie Coazy, a nice place for a cup of coffee. The history here is also special. Six or seven old Roman forts are hidden beneath the center of Valkenburg: in Castellumplein, the contours of the Praetorium Agrippinae fortress are marked with dark gray tiles in the streetwork. Museum Oud Valkenburg shows a permanent exhibition about Roman heritage. Sunk in the waves near Katwijk lies one of the best kept secrets of the Bulb Region: the remains of the old Roman settlement Lugdunum. From 1520 until the 17th century, remains occasionally emerged from the water or from the sand.

Herberg Welgelegen

Herberg Welgelegen is a beautiful and rustic old villa on the Oude Rijn that has been completely renovated based on a dream for better care. We believe in a lean, small-scale and enterprising organization that is supported by the local community and helped by volunteers. Because our commercial activities generate income, we have to rely less and less on the wallet of the government or clients. Finding and connecting each other is our guiding principle. Herberg Welgelegen, the former town hall of Valkenburg, has a rich history. The building was built in 1895 as a home for the director of one of the tile factories that could be found along the Oude Rijn. Welgelegen served as the mayor's residence until the 1920s. Afterwards, several families lived in the house.

Broekdijkmolen

Broekdijkmolen 1
2360 AA Leiden

The Broekdijkmolen in Warmond is an octagonal wooden polder mill built in 1862, which replaced a burnt-down octagonal mill from 1840. In 1972 the mill went downhill during a storm and could be stopped with difficulty. The following night, however, the mill burned down, probably as a result of overheating. The municipality of Haarlem offered an octagonal mill as a replacement. This could not be kept in its place in the Waarderpolder due to the expansion of an industrial estate. The mill was transferred in its entirety to Warmond and appeared to fit on the masonry substructure. The mill was installed in 1974; the restoration lasted until 1976. Until 1979, the Broekdijk mill was owned by the polder, then by the Oude Veenen water board and now by the Rijnlandse Molenstichting, which also supervised the 1976 reconstruction. The mill now drains the Broek en Simontjes polder on a voluntary basis. The mill is a national monument.
