On coffee in Joure

Joure is known as the Frisian town where Egbert Douwes started a shop selling colonial goods such as coffee in 1753. The rest is history, as they say. This route takes you through Joure and its beautiful surroundings.

Frisian polder land
In Scharsterbrug you cycle past some beautifully characteristic workers' houses and a church from the early twentieth century. A little later you drive along the banks of the Scharster Rijn, a canal that connects the Tjeukemeer with the Langweerderwielen. Here you have beautiful views over the wide Frisian polder land. And the rippling water of the Langweerderwielers. At this lake you pass Marina Noël and Marina De Hoek Recreation/Kapa Jachtbouw.

Frisian sailing village
Langweer is one of those typically beautiful old Frisian sailing villages. Until 1856, Langweer was only accessible by water. Here you will find, among other things, the beautiful Osinga State and the Reformed Church from 1777. To the right of the road past windmill De Hersteller you look out over the Oosterschar, a characteristic low moor area of reeds and swampy land.

Frisian windmills
There are some beautiful old windmills on your route. First you see the Skarrenmoune, a polder mill from the nineteenth century. At the Langweerderwielers you will pass the Sweachmermolen, also known as the Langweerder Molen. This beautiful example is a polder mill from 1782, which once also ground corn. De Hersteller is a thatched polder mill from 1857. It is the only surviving mill of four that drained the Grote Veenpolder around 1860. Penninga\\\'s Molen is a flour mill that arose in 1900 in Joure. The mill had already had a long life by then, because it was built in 1692 in the Zaan region as a paper mill.
