Discover North Friesland and its windmills

Due to the wind that always blows in this region, the horizon is marked by the blades of the mills. We are amazed when we look at this Old Dutch scene. The route that leads us to the northernmost parts of Friesland starts at node 30 in the eleven-city city of Dokkum. Dokkum is of course best known because Bonifatius is said to have been murdered there in 754. In 1298, Dokkum was the fourth place in Friesland to receive city rights. Dokkum played an important role during the Eighty Years' War. In 1572 the city was in the hands of the Geuzen for a few hours. Dokkum was severely punished for this. After 1579, the city joined the Union of Utrecht and an era of peace began. The city is worth a visit. Do not forget to visit the town hall, Admiralty House, Blokhûs, the weigh house and the churches. When we return to Dokkum as the end point of this route, 2 more special windmills have been added to the route that are definitely worth visiting/viewing. This is windmill De Hoop and Zeldenrust. Holwerd is mainly known for its ferry service to Ameland. There is also a reception station for the milk from the farmers on Ameland. In Nes on Ameland, the milk is transported to Holwerd via a 15-kilometre long pipeline. Walking route E9 runs through Holwerd. This route runs along the coast from Portugal to the Baltic States. Also near Holwerd we find a mill with the name De Hoop.
