Jacob van Lennep route, Part 29 ALT (Arnhem - Zutphen)

Country estates
Friday August 1. Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp pass the Hof in Dieren. Here in 1820, a new country house was completed on behalf of the lady Van Wassenaer ( Van Hogendorp's stingy niece ), which Van Lennep characterizes as "(...) an example of bad taste". The building was destroyed during the Second World War. Further on they visit Miss Brantsen in Huis Rhederoord. They climb the hill at the estate and enjoy a beautiful view from the dome over the IJsselvallei, Doesburg, Keppel and Doetinchem. To give you an idea of this panorama, you can take a trip from Rhederoord to the Posbank via junctions 63, 25 and 53, after which you pick up the route again at junction 12. The walkers pass Kasteel Biljoen and make a stopover in Velp , where they drink rum with water and sugar. Later in the afternoon they arrive at an inn just outside the Rijnpoort in Arnhem.

Time difference
The next day they walk to the Rosendael estate where they ignore the famous gardens. About the new construction of Park Sonsbeek, Van Lennep notes that"(...)countless amounts of money are being spent here\\\". When they return to Arnhem, they notice that the church bells differ by three quarters of an hour compared to those in Deventer, even though the distance between those cities is only 45 kilometers.

On Monday, August 4, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp will travel by stagecoach to Wageningen and Rhenen. The route makes a side trip to Oosterbeek, because this is where the Tomb of Jacob van Lennep is located.
