Friday, August 1. Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp pass the Hof te Dieren. Here, in 1820, commissioned by the young lady Van Wassenaer ( Van Hogendorp's stingy niece ), a new country house was completed that Van Lennep characterizes as"(...) a paragon of bad taste\\\". The building was destroyed during World War II. Further on they visit Miss Brantsen in Huis Rhederoord. They climb the hill near the estate and enjoy a beautiful view from the dome over the IJssel valley, Doesburg, Keppel and Doetinchem. To give you an idea of this panorama, you can take a trip to the Posbank from Rhederoord via junctions 63, 25 and 53, after which you pick up the route again at junction 12. The walkers pass Kasteel Biljoen and make a stopover in Velp , drinking rum with water and sugar. Later in the afternoon they arrive at an inn just outside the Rijnpoort in Arnhem.

Time difference
The next day they walk to the Rosendael estate where they ignore the famous gardens. Van Lennep notes about the new construction of Park Sonsbeek that"(...)innumerable amounts of money are being spent here\\\". When they return to Arnhem, they notice that the church bells are three quarters of an hour apart from those of Deventer, even though the distance between those cities is only 45 kilometers.

Grave monument
On Monday, August 4, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp will drive to Wageningen and Rhenen by diligence. The route makes a detour to Oosterbeek, because the grave monument Jacob van Lennep is located here.
