Description
The Wierden landscape of Groningen is one of the oldest cultural landscapes in North-West Europe. Groningen is dotted with mounds: centuries-old artificial hills that protected the inhabitants of this region from the rising water for more than a thousand years and to which the current Groningen landscape owes its current appearance.
The Groningen mound villages originated between 500 BC and 1000 AD. Due to the diking of the Wadden coast, the mounds became redundant and in some cases were excavated. Where this did not happen, the village church was often built on the highest point of the mound.
