Description

The village of Ziel (Groningen for Termunterzijl) was created after a lock was laid in the Termunterzijldiep in 1601. Here the Stadsweg ended that connected the city of Groningen with East Friesland via Appingedam, Farmsum and the Oosterhoek and the journey to Emden could be continued by ferry.
In 1686, the Zijl was destroyed and almost all inhabitants died during the St. Martin's Flood. In 1725, a new lock was built on behalf of the city of Groningen: the Boog van Ziel.
The village has a protected villagescape and is popular with tourists. In addition to having a bite to eat and enjoying the view from the dike, visitors can also visit the Cremer museum pumping station and soon perhaps the Termunterzijl fishing museum.
A little further away is the beautiful Punt van Reide nature reserve with the Dollard Visitor Center.
