Description

The village of Ziel (Groningen for Termunterzijl) was created after a lock was laid in the Termunterzijldiep in 1601. The Stadsweg ended here, connecting the city of Groningen via Appingedam, Farmsum and the Oosterhoek with East Friesland and the journey to Emden could be continued by ferry.
In 1686 the Zijl was destroyed and almost all inhabitants perished during the Sint Maartens flood. In 1725 a new lock was built by order of the city of Groningen: the Boog van Ziel.
The village has a protected townscape and is popular with tourists. Besides a'eat fish\\\' and enjoy the view from the dike, visitors can also visit the Cremer museum pumping station and soon perhaps the Termunterzijl fishing museum.
A little further on is the beautiful nature reserve, the Punt van Reide, with the Dollard Visitor Center.
