Walking through Hitland nature reserve

In the rural area of Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel it is beautiful to walk through Hitland. First you walk along the 's-Graveweg. You see pollard willows, bridges and some monumental farms. You then walk through a characteristic Dutch peat meadow area. Get some fresh air and enjoy the peace. From junction 53 you walk along the dike along the Hollandse IJssel. There were brick factories here for centuries that made so-called IJssel bricks from the sludge dredged from the river. The kilns were fired with peat from the peatlands behind them. You pass through Groot Hitland, an old hamlet. Then you walk back into nature, where you will see a mix of forest, swamps and vast meadows. From junction 54 you walk through Hitland-Noord, a poplar forest. The route ends at Muller&Co Nieuwerkerk.
