With this bike tour we take you into the history of the monks of the Katsberg from Normandy who have settled in the only Trappist brewery in the Netherlands: Abbey Onze Lieve Vrouwe de Koningshoeven in Berkel-Enschot.
Our first stop, however, will be right in the center of Tilburg, at the statue of King Willem II. Here the route starts with a short description of the connection between the old King and the fled Cistercians. On the other side of the statue is the Heuvelsekerk, which is built in the same style as the abbey of the transpists.
Stop two will be at the Lancers Barracks and the BeKa Chimney, which are also located in the center of town. The Lancierskazerne is the oldest preserved cavalry barracks in the Netherlands. The chimney is a remnant of the wool fabric factory Van den Bergh Krabbendam. The relationship between King Willem II and wool production will be established here.
The third stop will be at the former estate of King Willem II. The farms (farms) he owned at the time were used for wool production. Because the hooves fell under royal property, they were called the Koningshoeven. Here we stop at the garden house of the King.
Making a fourth stop when we make the transition from the busy and hectic city life of the inner city of Tilburg to the landscape of Allure: Koningshoeven-Moerenburg. Here we will reflect on the changes that have taken place over time and what remains of the peace that the monks sought in this region.
Stop five is at Eindhovenseweg 6/8a/8b. Nuns used to find shelter here. Nowadays the Reindierhoeve, as the estate is called, is in private hands and we will hear from the owner what the destination used to be and what the future plans are.
Our final destination will be the abbey, orienting ourselves to the relative tranquility of the area, but also focusing on the changes to which the landscape of the Koningshoeven is subject and what this will bring in the future.
Once back at the abbey, we will conclude the tour with a beer tasting of the current Trappist beers produced by the monks and there is the possibility to have something to eat at the Proeflokaal (the former Sheepfold of King Willem II) and a product or product produced by the monks. book to purchase in the monastery shop.
This bicycle excursion will take about an hour and is a nice break from the busy city life that Tilburg has to offer and offers insights that you would otherwise never have had. We wish you a lot of fun.
