The famous hydraulic engineer Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater once called De Rijp - his birthplace - 'the best village in Holland'. De Rijp was once a bustling fishing village known for its herring fishing and whalers. The traces of this water-rich history are still visible. De Rijp has a 17th century center with beautiful monuments and picturesque streets that are definitely worth walking through.
This route also takes you past a number of special social enterprises. In De Rijp there is the Koffie en Lekkers lunchroom (Jan Boonplein 10, next to the Mennonite church), where people with a distance to the labor market work.
