Tour of Kalmthout and Achtmaal

We start at the residential care center St Vincentius in Kalmthout, take the cycle path to the left of the building complex and cross farmland and notice at about 1.7 km after junction 1 in the Kraaiveldstraat a remnant of a peat canal from the 17th century that served to transport the peat from Nieuwmoer. with flat-bottomed boats via Zundert to Breda, a route of 30 km, dug by human hands without the modern means that we now use. Canals were also drawn near our resting point, the Pannehûske, but most canals have been reduced to streams.
At the turning point, at node 46 (deviate slightly to the right), we find an old inn from 1891 where a large terrace and playground invite you to take a break halfway on the route. Inn with an extensive map. We are located in the Buissche Heide.
About 1 km after junction 46  on the left one notices a group of houses, the summer residence of the Dutch poet Henritte Rolandt Holst-Van der Schalk (1869-1942).
Here she would receive refugees, during the first world war Belgians and with the second Jewish people.
After knot 53 we see the Bosrust, another opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal on a large terrace and also with a playground.
Kpt 7 is at the beginning of the De Maatjes nature reserve, a wetland area. The names of the country streets through which we now drive clearly indicate that this was also originally a wetland area.
