Your walking route starts with a cup of coffee at the cozy Stadsherberg Het Wapen van IJlst. IJlst is one of the smallest of the Eleven Cities. The town was founded on a river that now runs through IJlst as a canal. The gardens are located on the other side of the road, on the water: these gardens were used to bleach laundry. From here you walk to Sneek, the capital of Friesland from 1498 to 1500. This city was the first in Friesland to be completely walled. The Waterpoort is a beautiful monument here. In IJlst you can see Molen De Rat (1828), an octagonal smock mill with a miller's house. It is one of the three sawmills in Friesland. The mill was built in 1683 in the Zaanstreek.
