Tour of Waterpoort Sneek from Elfstedenstad IJlst

Your walking route starts with a cup of coffee at the cozy Stadsherberg Het Wapen van IJlst. IJlst is one of the smallest of the Eleven Cities. The town originated on a small river that now runs like a canal through IJlst. The gardens are located across the road, on the water: these gardens were previously used to bleach laundry. From here you walk to Sneek, the capital of Friesland from 1498 to 1500. This city was the first in Friesland to be completely walled. The Water Gate is a beautiful monument here. In IJlst you can see Molen De Rat (1828), an octagonal tower mill with a miller's house. It is one of the three sawmills in Friesland. The mill was built in 1683 in the Zaan region.
