Your cycling route starts with a cup of coffee Stadsherberg Het Wapen van IJlst. IJlst has had city rights since 1268 and is one of the smallest of the Eleven Cities. The town originated on the old Ee of Ye, one of the remains of which runs through IJlst like a canal. The houses are right on the street with the gardens across the road, on the water. These overgardens were formerly used to bleach the laundry. You cycle via the Heegermeer to Balk, a beautiful old town that enjoys a protected village view because of its many historic buildings.
