Description

This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour inspired by the journey that Van Lennep made through the Netherlands with his fellow student Van Hogendorp in 1823. Click here for an overview of all stages.

Channel of wine
Saturday August 9. Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp want to view the Canal to Maastricht. This is the current Zuid-Willemsvaart: the 122 kilometer long canal that was built between 1822 and 1826. The only channel the young men see that day is (as Van Lennep puts it rather aptly) "(...) flowing from bottles of wine\\\".

Early sermon
On Sundays, Van Lennep gets up late at half past nine. Van Hogendorp has already gone to the early sermon "as a pious person." Unlike earlier in Friesland, Van Hogendorp does not reprimand his traveling companion now. He probably knows better... This day also ends in the club, where the wine (also for Van Hogendorp) is flowing again. The next morning the travelers get up at half past six. With a hangover. There is no time left to view the canal.

Betuwe
Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp drive on muddy roads through the swamps in the Bommelerwaard. They think the centuries-old Zaltbommel is a beautiful place, but they soon cross the Waal again. They make the journey through the Betuwe on foot. Walking along the winding dikes, they enjoy the landscape under the radiant sun as they walk to Geldermalsen.

Between Heerewaarden and Varik you can cross the Waal by ferry between the end of April and the end of September. Out of season you can cross the Waal via junctions 78 and 79. Junctions 76 and 91 then lead you back to the route.
