Did you know that many trees that come onto the market in various European countries have a Dutch origin? The Netherlands has been the nursery for European avenue tree cultivation for years. The cultivation of avenue, forest and park trees in the Netherlands has several clear concentration areas. For example, there is an old center for tree cultivation around Opheusden and Kesteren. The cultivation of fruit and avenue trees originated here around the 16th and 17th centuries.
Cycling past the Betuwe nurseries
The cycle route takes you past avenue tree nurseries and catering establishments and lets you enjoy the varied landscape, beautiful nature and cultural-historical pearls. The Betuwe landscape forms the backdrop for the avenue trees and is therefore a show garden for the cultivated trees of all shapes and sizes. Growing a good tree, from small spindle to large tree, requires a lot of expertise and dedication. When cycling the route, or during open days at the nurseries, you will learn more about avenue tree growing.
Expansion of avenue tree cultivation Tree cultivation in the river area originally developed on the light transshipment soils, but later on the slightly heavier and fertile clay soils. Nurseries are now being expanded or constructed in various places in the landscape - where it fits and where it is compatible with the current land use. The Betuwe avenue tree growers already occupy an important place in the European market and they have the ambition to grow into the leading avenue tree center in the world.
Do you want to shorten the Avenue Tree Route? The route can be divided into three shorter loops:
East (46 km):
This route starts at junction 19 in Opheusden. You cycle the normal route to junction 16 at Dodewaard. Then follow the signs towards junction 18 and then back to junction 19 in Opheusden.
Center (26.5 km):
This route starts at junction 19 in Opheusden. From there you cycle via junction 18 to junction 16 at Dodewaard. After junction 51 at IJzendoorn, follow the signs to junction 93 at Kesteren and then cycle back to the starting point in Opheusden.
West (28 km):
This route starts at junction 93 in Kesteren. From junction 93, follow the signs to junction 51 and then cycle further along the western side of the route until you arrive at junction 93 again.
