Description
This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour inspired by the trip that Van Lennep made in 1823 with his fellow student Van Hogendorp through the Netherlands. Click here for an overview of all stages.
Vliedbergen
Wednesday, August 27. Already at six o'clock in the morning a car is ready for Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp. They make a trip across Walcheren. For the first time, Van Lennep writes that they also use a map. On their journey they see some vliedbergen. Nowadays it is assumed that defense towers were built on these artificial mounds. You will see three vliedbergen on this route: near junction 7 and just before junction 11. There is also one at Terra Maris: a reconstruction of a motte has been built on it.

In Westkapelle, the companions walk on the Westkappelse Zeedijk. They also climb the church tower in which the lighthouse is located: the Westkapelle Hoog. This lighthouse is still active. In good weather you can see it from Groede (West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen), for example. Back in Middelburg it's time to network again. After all, that is also an important reason for making the inspection tour: strengthening ties within the own circle. Traveling in 1823 took much more time than it does now: you didn't just go back and forth from Amsterdam for a day to, say, Groningen, Ampsen or Middelburg.

Shipyard
Early in the evening Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp drive by carriage to Vlissingen. Meadows surround the city. The entire landscape must remain level, so that it can be attacked from the fortress if necessary. The young men visit a shipyard. Two warships are being built, each such ship cost a million guilders at the time. An unimaginable power for that time!
