Jacob van Lennep route, Part 39 (Goes - Middelburg)

Flea butter
Sunday August 24 does not start well. While Van Lennep had to laugh in Drenthe because Van Hogendorp had no flea butter with him, in Goes his own supply of that miracle drug has apparently run out, because he is now also plagued at night by the jumping vermin.

Moonshine
The travelers attend a church service about which Van Lennep says:"I have never heard so much nonsense, pedantry and silliness.\\\" The lunch is also not to their liking. Fortunately, Goes and Kloetinge can be charming. And otherwise there is always the society. Here, in the moonlight and surrounded by music, Van Lennep is once again busy with a beautiful lady. The travelers end the evening at the home of a pastor friend and do not return to the inn until half past two in the morning, where the servant has been waiting at the door for their return all along. The night's sleep is flea-free thanks to a better room with clean beds.

Koddebeier
On Monday morning, Van Lennep and his companion leave Goes again. They run through, among other places, Gravenpolder and Nisse. In Heinkenszand they rest in an inn and fall asleep there because of the warm weather. Just like in the Achterhoek, Van Hogendorp (and not Van Lennep...) is rudely awakened here by a constable. This"koddebeier\\\" demands that Van Hogendorp show his passport. The count refuses, so the constable takes him to the mayor. If Van Hogendorp still makes himself known, the travelers will be allowed to continue their walk. They walk to the Sloe, the former waterway between Zuid-Beveland and Walcheren. After the crossing, they view the Oosterkerk in Middelburg, among other things, and then it is soon time for the society.
