Description
This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour inspired by the journey that Van Lennep made through the Netherlands with his fellow student Van Hogendorp in 1823. Click here for an overview of all stages.
Funerary tomb
Wednesday August 20. Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp visit the Grote Kerk, the cradle of the Oranje Nassau's. In the Prinsenkapel from 1525 they view some tombs, such as that of Engelbrecht II of Nassau. They are moved by the beauty of the tombs and believe that the art form has only deteriorated since then.

Mastbos
The next day they walk to Ginneken. They then walk through the Mastbos, one of the oldest cultivated forests in the Netherlands. Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp end up in the beautiful village of Het Haagje: the current Princenhage district. They return to the heart of Breda via another royal forest, namely the Liesbos. Here they visit Breda Castle, which served as a military hospital in 1823.
The next day they walk to Ginneken. They then walk through the Mastbos, one of the oldest cultivated forests in the Netherlands. Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp end up in the beautiful village of Het Haagje: the current Princenhage district. They return to the heart of Breda via another royal forest, namely the Liesbos. On Friday, August 22, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp will walk to Etten. They walk through the heath and cornfields to Roosendaal where they take a break in an inn. They have to reluctantly accept the company of Catholic pilgrims from Kevelaar, because the mail truck has not yet arrived. Van Lennep complains for the umpteenth time that he is being deposed. However, he does not mention amounts. Is the travel budget donated by his father almost gone yet?

In Bergen op Zoom, Van Lennep does not spend a word on the Markiezenhof, the Gevangenpoort or the St. Gertrude Church that you see on the Grote Markt. He does enjoy the fortifications completed around 1744: Menno van Coehoorn's masterpiece. You can visit the Ravelijn op den Zoom at regular times.
