Description
Today you will discover the former fortified town of Steenwijk. This beautiful town formed the heart of various sailing routes in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The city walls and city canals are a feast for the eyes. Steenwijk is friendly and lively, a town with a village feel, in the middle of a beautiful, diverse region. It was in a strategic location during the Eighty Years' War, which meant that the town was regularly fought over. Be surprised by the rich history: Steenwijk has more than 60 national monuments, including De Markt and the city canals. The fifteenth-century church tower is the oldest existing building in Steenwijk.
