Description

Today's walking route leads you to Kloosterburen, named after the two monasteries that used to stand here. Olde Monastery was founded around 1175 and Nijen Monastery dated from 1204. Only the monastery church of the Olde Monastery remained after the Reduction. This church came into the hands of the Protestants, but was eventually demolished. The reformed Nicholas Church of Kloosterburen was built in 1843. Kloosterburen is a Catholic enclave and also has a Catholic church: the Sint-Willibrordus Church from 1868. This was designed by the famous architect Pierre Cuypers. Fun fact: here you will find the northernmost carnival association in the Netherlands, cv Oldeclooster. On Sint Jansstraat you can walk past the sixteenth-century Oldeklooster farm.
