Description

Today's walking route leads you to Kloosterburen, named after the two monasteries that once stood here. Olde Monastery was founded around 1175 and Nijen Monastery dates from 1204. Only the monastery church of the Olde Monastery remained after the Reduction. This church came into the hands of the Protestants, but was eventually demolished. The reformed Nicholas Church of Kloosterburen was built in 1843. Kloosterburen is a Catholic enclave and also has a Catholic church: the Sint-Willibrorduskerk from 1868. It was designed by the well-known architect Pierre Cuypers. Fun fact: you will find the most northern carnival association in the Netherlands, cv Oldeclooster, here. On Sint Jansstraat you can still walk past the sixteenth-century Oldelooster farm.
