The Fulda cycle route runs for more than 247 kilometers from the Fulda source on the 950 m high Wasserkuppe in the Rhön to the Wesertal to Bad Karlshafen. Beyond the three-river town of Hann. Münden, where'Fulda and Werra have to kiss and pay their name\\\'.
The Fulda cycle route takes you about 130 km through Grimmheimat NordHessen. Romantic half-timbered towns such as Bad Hersfeld, Rotenburg ad Fulda, Melsungen and the documenta (a 5-yearly art event) city of Kassel meander along the Fulda and invite you to stop over.
Although it is a river cycle route, the R1 involves some gentle hills. The flattest parts are Gersfeld - Fulda and Kassel - Hann - Munden. Up to 85% of the road is asphalted, the remaining distance is mostly on gravel paths that are easy to drive on. Partly the route leads through little to moderately busy local roads, in other parts the route is almost completely car-free.
