Put on your sturdy walking shoes for a varied walk through the Horsterwold: the largest contiguous deciduous forest in the Netherlands. You will see chestnuts, oaks, poplars and cherry trees. You will pass the Groenewoudse Tocht, a watercourse that you can view from a bench. Deeper in the forest lies the Stille Kern: a quiet piece of primeval nature where a herd of wild Konik horses graze. The Tuurtoren, a twelve-metre-high watchtower, is located near some of the lakes. Then you continue through the forest. However young the Horsterwold is, the trees look as if they have been here for hundreds of years. The clay soil is so fertile that many trees have grown spectacularly fast and there is a wealth of mushrooms and plant species to see.
