We leave at the monastery square for a short walk along the air raid shelter. Walk towards St. Jan, the oldest church in our village, which lost its spire in the aftermath of the war. A beautiful church that is well worth a visit.
Turn left before the church through the Kerkstraat, the oldest street in Goirle with a few beautiful authentic old villas belonging to the notables of Goirle.
Take the first street on the right and continue until you reach the Leij. Here you can choose to walk through the new Vossereijten nature reserve or continue your route on the tram track.
Along the path are beautiful old acacia trees. Here the steam tram line ran from Tilburg via Goirle to Hilvarenbeek and Esbeek. From 1909 it was possible to travel on to Poppel and Turnhout. Around 1930 the steam tram was already outdated. The tram line from Tilburg to the border was discontinued on September 15, 1935 and public transport was taken over by the buses of the BBA. The tram became a memory, but"the tramway\\\" remains recognizable.
At walking junction 99 we cross the bridge and walk on until we see the air raid shelter on the right. A painted chimney protrudes from a knoll. After the war, the air raid shelter was used as a dressing room for the football club VOAB, which was housed on the site to your right.
If you continue the path on your right, you will pass halfway along the forest where the first swimming pool in Goirle was built by Mr van Puijenbroek. Until 1959, the inhabitants of Goirlen could swim here. Then the new swimming pool on the Fabriekstraat was opened.
We walk on and cross the bridge at the end of the path to arrive at the watermolenstraat. It is so called because a water mill stood here for a long time. On the left you see the monumental chimney of the HAVEP.
On the website of the Goolse Geheimen you can find various videos and texts with extra explanation about the special places you will encounter along the way. Check: www.goolsegeheimen.nl
