Description
This long cycling route starts at Hotel Restaurant Toxopeus in Anjum. During this cycling tour you will discover the surroundings of the Lauwersmeer and Dokkum. The Lauwersmeer is known as a bird paradise on the former seabed. In earlier times, fresh and salt water flowed into each other in the Lauwerszee. Fear of flooding led to the construction of a dam in 1969. A beautiful new landscape was created on the former seabed, a real bird paradise. In short: a wonderful environment for cycling. Also take a look at the viewpoints and bird watching huts. Once you have completed a tour around the lake, follow the route to Dokkum, one of the Frisian eleven cities. You end the route at Hotel Restaurant Toxopeus, where you can have a delicious dinner and spend the night to explore the area even better.
