Rondje Houten takes you through the surprising and varied landscape of the municipality of Houten: the river landscape of the island of Schalkwijk, the orchards of't Goy, the new nature of forest Nieuw Wulven and the green and water-rich Houten. It is an area with a rich history, often still visible in the landscape. The route starts in the center of Houten at the station where there is also a bicycle rental and a tourist office. Get the free map of the Kromme Rijnstreek there; handy for on the go. You can also start the route at Hajé restaurant, TOP location at bicycle junction 90. You can park your car there for free and ride the route on your own bicycle. You can shorten the route by cycling from junction 51 or 14 to junction 64. The route partly goes along the historic Stairs Route with works of art by Marijn te Kolsté.
Along the way you will pass many highlights: Speelbos Nieuw wulven, Fort Fectio and Fort Vechten (junction 98), Wickenburg estate, the orchards in't Goy, the works of the New Dutch Waterline on the island of Schalkwijk, the inundation field on the Achterdijk in Schalkwijk, the floodplains along the Lek, the Plofsluis at the bicycle bridge over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, Heemstede Castle, Fort at Hemeltje and the green zone of Houten.
Marijke van Eijkeren's booklet'Houten: het landscape\\\' gives an impression of the natural and cultural-historical background of the landscape that this cycle route traverses in words and pictures. It offers inspiration to further discover the area on foot or by bicycle and refers to other cycling and walking routes.
