Borger-Odoorn, Drenthe, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 1016148
Provided by: Groots Genieten
Your route starts at Musselkanaal, on the Stadskanaal. This canal was completed in 1856 and was dug almost entirely by Groningen and German workers with shovels. In the nineteenth century, the Stadskanaal was one of the busiest shipping routes in the Netherlands. Because waiting times at the locks increased to several hours, cafes and shops were established in these places. This is how the towns of Stadskanaal and Musselkanaal were created. Along the water you see beautiful old houses: a nice cycling area. At Smeerling you enter the valley of the Ruiten Aa. You will see beautiful ash trees and grasslands bordered by wooded areas. You drive back via the Beetser Koeln (Beetserkuilen).
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
