Wieringen: Walking through Westerland and Den Hoelm

From Camping Waddenzee you first walk a bit through the village of Westerland. Here you pass a few characteristic buildings and the Nicholas Church, whose tower dates back to the fifteenth century. Then you descend a bit, into the polders. Meadows, old farms, tree hedges: it's a great walk here! From the hamlet of De Hoelm you walk a bit along an old dike that still contains seaweed. Until 1923 the waves of the Zuiderzee still crashed against it. Now the Amstelmeer Canal ripples here. A nice path to get a breath of fresh air and enjoy the peace. Finally, you walk through De Haukes: a village where the ferry once moored to transfer the tram from the Schagen - Wieringen steam line. Time for a terrace!
