Cycling across the Veluwezoom you will come across one war reference after another: the Second World War, but also the Cold War and sieges from long ago.
Doorwerth Castle
The route starts at Boscafé De Beken, on the estate of the same name. After a cup of coffee you quickly cycle past listening point L20: Landings of paratroopers and gliders. Here you can hear how the sky was colorful on Sunday, September 17, 1944, when countless paratroopers landed here. Nearby you will discover the beautiful Doorwerth Castle, a beautiful example of a moated castle, where the thick outer walls together with the water provide protection.
Arnhem War Museum
You will soon cycle past K08-Arnhem - Ijssellinie. During the Cold War, the Rhine near Arnhem played a more important role. If the threat of a Russian invasion became serious, the Rhine could be closed here by a weir. You can stop at the Arnhem War Museum 40-45 to learn more about the eventful period of WWII. After a cup of coffee at the cozy restaurant Planken Wambuis, you cycle via Ede to your starting point.
