The New Dutch Waterline between Maas and Waal

A cycle tour past defense works of a fairly recent date: the buildings of the Dutch Waterline. After you have been able to get a breath of fresh air for a while along the Waal, you will pass the Battery under Brakel. This defense was built in 1879-1884. The fort closed off the Waal, the floodplains and the southern Waaldijk. You continue through the unspoilt landscape to the Battery under Poederoijen. This was built between 1879 and 1886. It is beautiful to cycle along the Afgedamde Maas, while looking out over the meadows and characteristic farms. You pass through beautiful villages such as Aalst and Nederhemert. In Zaltbommel you will pass the Steam and Energy Museum, after your visit you can drive into the historic city center. The route ends at Eetcafe Cafetaria Ons Trefpunt.
