Walking through the Westenschouwen Forestry

This walk starts at Camping de Meypacht in Burgh-Haamstede. From the campsite you walk straight into Boswachterij Westenschouwen, the largest forest in Zeeland. A hilly dune landscape with sand drifts, valleys and dune meadows. The Boswachterij is rich in birds. In the old tall pines you can see nests of birds of prey such as buzzards and hawks. You also walk around a water extraction point, a beautiful, peaceful lake where nature takes its course. Sometimes you are lucky and can spot deer. More than a hundred years ago there was no forest to be seen in this place. At that time the area also had a different name: the Dominale Duinen. It was then a large drifting plain. Around 1920, pines and marram grass were planted. Staatsbosbeheer started planting deciduous trees in the 1970s.
