Walking through the forestry Westenschouwen

This walk starts at Camping de Meypacht in Burgh-Haamstede. From the campsite you can walk straight into Boswachterij Westenschouwen, the largest forest in Zeeland. A hilly dune landscape with sand drifts, valleys and dune meadows. The Boswachterij is rich in birdlife. In the old tall pines you can see nests of birds of prey such as buzzards and hawks. You also walk around a water extraction site, a beautiful relaxing lake where nature takes its course. Sometimes you are lucky and you can spot deer. More than a hundred years ago there was no forest in this place. Then the area was also called differently: the Dominal Dunes. It was then a large drifting plain. Around 1920 pines and marram were planted there. Staatsbosbeheer started planting deciduous trees in the 1970s.
