Description
Workum is a gem wedged between the Frisian Lakes and the IJsselmeer. With this route you will discover the charm of this town. You can also walk into the polders to enjoy the Frisian silence.
Jopie Huisman
The route starts on the edge of Workum. You can walk leisurely towards the Diepe Dolte, a waterway that connects to the Warkumer Trekfaert that runs to Bolsward. Here you will see beautiful centuries-old buildings, ranging from bell-shaped farmhouses to buildings with stepped and bell gables. You will also discover a rich cultural history in Workum's main street. You will pass, among others, the Sint Werenfridus Church from 1877. Further on you can visit the Jopie Huisman Museum, which is highly recommended.
City Hall
The core of the Town Hall dates back to the Middle Ages, just like St. Gertrude's Church. The Waag originally dates from 1650. On the edge of the village is the Nylânner mill from 1784. Walk up the dike along the Zool for a beautiful view, in the distance you can see the church tower of Hindeloopen. The rest of the route you walk on a car-free road through the polders.
