Walking in Halsteren

Start in Halsteren
The walk starts in Halsteren, which lies on the northern spur of the Brabantse Wal. Before you go for a walk, you can enjoy a cup of coffee with a snack at 1633 Food & Drink, or come back here for lunch. Halsteren probably originated as a peat extraction village. In the 14th century, a small church was built on the Brabantse Wal, dedicated to Saint Martin.

From Halsteren to Lepelstraat
From Halsteren you walk through the countryside towards Lepelstraat. Lepelstraat played an important role in the ecclesiastical history of Halsteren in the 17th century. In 1647 a hidden church was established in Lepelstraat. At that time, the name Lepelstraat appears for the first time in the archives.

Height differences on the Brabantse Wal
From Lepelstraat you walk back to Halsteren. Halsteren is located on the Brabantse Wal, which means that height differences of up to ten meters can be observed within the village. This provides beautiful views during the walk. The steep edge of the Brabantse Wal was probably caused by erosion by the river Scheldt and by the sea. Bergen op Zoom, Halsteren, Woensdrecht and Ossendrecht were created because the location on the steep edge at the same time offered a safe harbor against flooding and gave access to the fertile sea clay soils. Continue walking until you reach 1633 Food & Drink, where you can relax after a nice walk on the Brabantse Wal.
