Walking in Halsteren

Start in Halsteren
The walk starts in Halsteren, which is located on the northern extension of the Brabantse Wal. Halsteren probably originated as a peat extraction village. In the 14th century a small church was built on the Brabantse Wal, dedicated to Saint Martin.

From Halsteren to Lepelstraat
From Halsteren you walk through the countryside towards Lepelstraat. Lepelstraat played an important role in the ecclesiastical history of Halsteren in the 17th century. In 1647 a clandestine church was established in Lepelstraat. At that time the name Lepelstraat first appears in the archives.

Height differences on the Brabantse Wal
From Lepelstraat you walk back to Halsteren. Halsteren is located on the Brabantse Wal, which means that within the village you can observe height differences of up to ten metres. This provides beautiful views during the walk. The steep edge of the Brabantse Wal was probably created by erosion by the river Scheldt and by the sea. Bergen op Zoom, Halsteren, Woensdrecht and Ossendrecht were created because the location on the steep edge simultaneously offered a safe haven against flooding and gave access to the fertile sea clay soils. Walk on until you reach 1633 Eten & Drinken, where you can relax after a lovely walk on the Brabantse Wal.
