Your route starts at the First Frisian Skating Museum, nice to visit before or after walking. Hindeloopen was an important trading place towards the end of the Middle Ages. Skippers conducted a lively trade with cities on the Baltic Sea. The town had a great heyday in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the capital captain's houses still show how rich the Hindeloopers were then. This wealth can also be found in Hindelooper painting. This art of painting is a unique profession, which is practiced by only a few craftsmen. Gauke and Pieter Bootsma still paint every conceivable object and furniture by hand in this specific style, according to old tradition.
