Schagen, North Holland, The Netherlands
Hiking route: 1004970
Provided by: route.nl
There is much to see in and around Schagen. You will find nice museums there, but Schagen itself is also special. The towers of Schagen Castle date back to the Middle Ages!
Urban farm
Your route starts at the Vreeburg Farm and Carriage Museum, a seventeenth-century city farm that has been completely restored and furnished in the old style. Be sure to take a look here! Then you walk to the Schagerwiel. The North Holland landscape may look lovely, but for centuries people have battled the water here with the help of polder mills. The water has now been subdued and provides a beautiful backdrop for your walk today.
First World War
Via Tjallewal and Tjolke you walk along more waters back to Schagen. In the heart of Schagen you will see the Christoforus Church from 1883. Just before the end of the route you will pass the Museum Battle of the Somme 1914-1918, in one of the castle towers of Schagen. This is the first and only museum in the Netherlands focused on the First World War. Immediately drop by the Regional Museum 40-45, which is housed in the other tower.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
