In Schagen you will find special museums about the First and Second World Wars, in centuries-old castle towers. You also walk a bit along the winding West Frisian Omringdijk.
Middle Ages
Your route starts at the Regional Museum 1940-1945. It is located in one of the castle towers of Schagen Castle, right in the center of this cozy town. The towers date back to the Middle Ages! The museum contains numerous objects from the period 1940-1945. Walk straight into the Battle of the Somme 1914-1918 Museum, in the other castle tower: the first and only museum in the Netherlands about the First World War.
Keinsmer wheel
In the heart of Schagen you will see the Christoforus Church from 1883. Via the hamlet of Nes you walk along the canal to another small hamlet, Keinse. The Keinsmerwiel, a little further on, is a large and round wheel, now a nature reserve. It is diked on the outside: it is located within the West Frisian Omringdijk. There are several wheels along the western and northern part of the monumental dike, which give the route a winding course. A beautiful sight!
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
