A tour around Hindeloopen

Hindeloopen is a beautiful old town on the IJsselmeer. With this walk you can take a good look at these beautiful monuments. In the area you can get a breath of fresh air in the vast polder land.

Fishing place
From Hotel de Stadsboerderij and Eetcafé de Brabander you first walk through the protected cityscape of Hindeloopen. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, skippers conducted a lively trade here with cities on the Baltic Sea. The remaining capital captain's houses show how rich the Hindeloopers were at the time. Poverty increased due to trade restrictions and Hindeloopen became a fishing town.

Stoenckherne
You walk along the canal into the vast polder land. You pass a farmhouse, a little later you can get a breath of fresh air in the flat land. As you walk along the former Zuiderzeedijk, you will see the former Workum lighthouse on the left. On the right you look out over Stoenckherne, a salt marsh area outside the dike that turns yellow in spring due to the rare spider marsh. In the distance you can see the church tower of Hindeloopen: a beautiful picture!
