Description

Surrounding dike
The route starts at Museum Eenigenburg, where you can learn everything about striking things in the surrounding landscape using a large compass. Experience how parents and their children lived in the day laborer's house and follow the Eenigenburg family on their journey by ship to America in 1849. Then you walk into the polder, via the West Frisian Omringdijk: the only monumental dike in the world.

Burger wheels
The dike meanders beautifully around the Burgerwielen, a nature reserve of two wheels located behind each other that are connected by a ditch. The lakes were created before 1597, the year that the Zijpe finally became dry. The wheels were probably kept open because of the depth, which made it good fishing water. Incredibly, everything was dumped into one of the wheels during WWII to keep it out of the hands of the Germans - including cars!
