The West Frisian Omringdijk is the only monumental dike in the world - of course it is located in the Netherlands. If you know where to look, you can read the historical battle against the water from the landscape.
Wild grounds
Your walking route starts at Automuseum Schagen, where various car brands from Europe and America are displayed. Drink a cup of coffee and walk through the museum, the entrance is free. Then you walk into the West Frisian polder, along numerous waterways. It is a pleasure to walk in such beautiful scenery, especially when you know how much work has gone into taming the sea and wild lands.
Surrounding dike
This area is known for its wide views, high Dutch skies and colorful bulb fields. You will also come across picturesque places. The old hamlets and ribbon villages that arose here after the reclamation, such as Sint Maartensbrug, are worth a visit. Via the Schagerwiel you walk back into Schagen. The route of the West Frisian Omringdijk here shows indications of the historical battle against the water: bends and a wheel indicate dike breaches. Special to experience!
