Eleven fountains route in Friesland

The Elfstedentocht on ice is becoming increasingly rare. That is why there is also a new Elfstedentocht. Not connected by ice, but by fountains in each city: Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker, Dokkum, Leeuwarden, IJlst, Sneek, Sloten and Stavoren. A wonderful bike ride through the beautiful landscape of Friesland.

Eleven fountains
The fountains in the eleven cities were made by international artists from eleven different countries. The local population is closely involved in the design of the fountain in question. Each fountain tells the history of the corresponding city. For example, in Harlingen, whaling played a major role in maritime history. The whale was a symbol for trade, but it also symbolized the powers of the sea. That is why the fountain in Harlingen is a whale. From Harlingen you cycle on to Franeker and Dokkum.

Across Leeuwarden
One of the eleven cities is of course Leeuwarden. In Leeuwarden you will find the seven-meter high fountain'Love in Leeuwarden\\\'. The fountain consists of two white heads of a boy and a girl resting on an oval-shaped, black plateau. The artist Jaume Plensa got his inspiration for the mist fountain when he saw the mist above the Frisian fields early in the morning. Then you cycle on to IJlst, Sneek, Sloten and Stavoren.
