Eleven fountains route in Friesland

The Elfstedentocht on the ice is an increasingly rare event. That is why there is a new Elfstedentocht. Not connected by ice, but by fountains in every city: Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker, Dokkum, Leeuwarden, IJlst, Sneek, Sloten and Stavoren. A wonderful bike ride through the beautiful landscape of Friesland.

Eleven fountains
The fountains in the eleven cities were created by international artists from eleven different countries. The local population is closely involved in the design of the fountain in question. Each fountain tells the history of the corresponding city. For example, whaling played a major role in Harlingen's maritime history. The whale was a symbol of trade, but it also symbolized the forces of the sea. That is why the fountain in Harlingen is a whale. From Harlingen you cycle to Franeker and Dokkum.

Straight through Leeuwarden
One of the eleven cities is of course Leeuwarden. In Leeuwarden there is the seven-meter high fountain'Love in Leeuwarden\\\'. The fountain consists of two white heads of a boy and a girl resting on an oval-shaped black plateau. The artist Jaume Plensa got his inspiration for the mist fountain when he saw the mist above the Frisian fields early in the morning. Then you cycle to IJlst, Sneek, Sloten and Stavoren.
