Cycling around Ter Apel

When you think of cycling in Groningen, you might think of cycling with a view of long fields. But cycling in Westerwolde is different: no straight lines, but winding roads. Be surprised and discover the area around Ter Apel during this cycling route.

Cycling in Westerwolde
In Westerwolde you cycle along winding streams and see gentle slopes in the land interspersed with historic buildings and charming villages. The starting point of the route is in Emmer-Compascuum at the Visvijver. Emmer-Compascuum is a typical peat colony and this is reflected in the landscape. You leave via the Visvijver in a northerly direction to Roswinkel and Ter Apel.

Wooded Ter Apel
Ter Apel is located on the border of Groningen, Drenthe and Germany, in the extreme southeast of the province of Groningen on a wooded sand ridge. The village of Ter Apel originated from a monastery and is located near the Ruiten Aa stream. There is a lot of wooded nature reserve around the village that you will cycle through during this cycle route. Here you can relax wonderfully. You cycle through the old monastery forests with large, imposing old oaks and beech trees.

Medieval Sellingen
A little later you pass Sellingen. Sellingen is an esdorp and it has a village green characteristic of these villages. The village originated in the Middle Ages. Via Mussel and Musselkanaal you cycle back to the starting point in Emmer-Compascuum.
