The rolling Stakenbergse- and Elspeetse Heide

A lovely moorland walk. Discover the beautifully rolling Elspeetse and Stakenbergse Heide on the Veluwe, near Vierhouten. You might even run into the shepherd and his sheep!

You can see Vierhouten near here and walk straight into nature. Just like the Stakenbergse Heide a little further on your route, the rolling Elspeetse Heide is a remnant of the immense heathland that once covered this part of the Veluwe. It is a cultural-historically valuable area, because there are several ancient burial mounds here. You will also find old oak coppice groves here.

Oxhouse
It is nice and quiet on the heath, you only hear the bleating of the heath sheep that traditionally graze here. You may even meet the shepherd with his flock! On the way back you walk along the Ossenkolk, a fen with an island, beautifully situated in the woods. The fen could have been named after ox wagons that stopped here to drink, on the Oude Zwolseweg, an ancient cart road from the IJssel region to Amersfoort and Utrecht.
