The Veluwe was created in the ice age by glaciers that raised moraines, followed by large sand drifts in the Middle Ages due to forest clearing. Hence all the variety!
Render cliffs
You cycle onto the Elspeetse heath, where your thoughts are given plenty of space. The shepherd with herd of sheep could cross your path. You cycle straight through the woods to Epe. Here you drive through the Renderklippen; sand dunes from the Middle Ages. The name therefore means up and down hills.
moor sheep
The beautiful rolling heath of the Renderklippen is very special. This is one of the quiet places in the Netherlands. Burial mounds remind of earlier times. The Epe-Heerde Sheep Herd grazes about 130 Veluwe Heath Sheep here, a breed that had almost disappeared. The shepherd likes to chat with you when you meet him! You drive back to your starting point along heathland and through quiet forests, via the cozy little village of Vierhouten.
