Through the woods near Elp

Enjoy a breath of fresh air and walk in the woods near Elp, a lesser-known nature reserve that is wedged between the forests of Grolloo and Schoonloo. This is also the extensive nature reserve Hart van Drenthe!

Blackwater
Just outside Elp you walk into the nature reserve around the Elperstroom. You will soon walk past the Heerenveldje, where a groundwater meter can be seen. Groundwater is very important in this humid area. The heart is formed by the Elpermeer or'Zwattewater\\\'. It is easy to guess where the name comes from: it is completely colored black by the peat!

Pingo
The Zwattewater is not only a special lake because of the color of the water. This is a pingo ruin: a remnant of an Ice Age hill, the core of which was formed by ice. On the other side of Elp you experience a completely different landscape, just below the Amerdiep and the Holmers-Halkenbroek stream valley. Here you can see very far around you. Wonderful to get some fresh air and let your thoughts wander!
