Eight through the Brachter Wald

During this route you walk through the German Brachter Wald, a vast area that is ideal for walks.

Starting point: the Witte Stein
Restaurant de Witte Stein is the ideal starting point to explore the surrounding area. You can enjoy a tasty lunch or a delicious dinner here on the terrace - or inside the cozy hunter's hut. Or just a cup of coffee with something tasty, of course. Moreover, you can also park here for free. The Witte Stein near Reuver is one of the entrances to the Brachterwald.

Brachter Wald
In recent decades, a unique heathland landscape has developed on the nutrient-poor and dry sandy soils of the Brachter Wald. In this nature reserve you will find rare endangered plants and animals, as well as a lot of big game. Deer roam around and the heathland in the area is grazed by a flock of sheep. A quarter of the area consists of open heathland vegetation and grasslands. The rest consists of forests, mainly of Scots pine. The Brachter Wald is closed to motorized traffic, making it a wonderful place to take a relaxing walk and completely unwind.

Forest with a history
After World War II, there was conflict between the Western and Eastern Alliances. These tensions led to the Western Allies establishing several military bases in Germany. This also included the largest ammunition depot of the British Rhine Army. This largest ammunition depot in Western Europe was designated as a protected nature reserve in 1997 after the soldiers left.
