Standbeeld van de Engel
This bronze statue of Marius van Beek (1921-2003) was unveiled in 2002 by the mayor of Renkum. Van Beek chose this place because of the beautiful view over the Rhine. During the Second World War, an army of allies crossed the river here and was stopped by the German occupiers. The statue is an angel standing on one leg. It is both a man and a woman. The figure appears to be about to detach from the earth and rise. The figure frees itself from the heaviness, the body stays behind. For the sculptor, an angel was not a sound and intact human being, but a light, fleeing figure in transit. A creature that shoots away, that you can hardly see, but that does leave a (peace) message behind. A dream image for peace.
