Oudste Kerkje van Nederland

The original nave of the Oude Kerk was built during the Carolingian period (8th to 10th century). The current building still contains parts of tuff from that time! The Oude Kerk is therefore one of the oldest surviving churches in the Netherlands. Church services are still held since the Reformation by Protestants. During Operation Market Garden in 1944, the British suffered heavy losses in the battle for the bridge over the Lower Rhine. After three days they withdrew to Oosterbeek. The church served as one of the Allied rallying points before their retreat across the Rhine. Heavy fighting took place around the church for eight days. The church was partly destroyed during the war and was restored in 1949-1950.
