Volkeraksluizen met uitkijktoren
Curious about the most visited lock complex in Europe? Get on the lookout tower at the Volkerak locks in the fortified city of Willemstad for free and take a look at the many locks, sluices and the recreational yacht lock. In the meantime, the ships are moving from the Volkerak to the Hollands Diep or vice versa. The Volkerak locks near Willemstad are Europe's largest and busiest inland navigation lock complex. This Delta work is of great economic importance for shipping. The lock complex was built between 1957 and 1967 and separates the Hollandsch Diep from the Volkerak. The Volkerak locks thus protect the south of Zeeland from high water and form an important point for shipping traffic. Every year, almost 150,000 cargo ships and various pleasure craft pass through here. Climb the tower Do you want to discover how the ships move up and down? Then climb (for free) the watchtower at the lock complex and look out over the Hollands Diep. Combine your visit to the locks with a trip to the neighboring fortresses Sabina and De Hel or relax on the beach that you will find halfway along the Volkerak Bridge: De Banaan. Don't forget to wave to the captains on the ships along the way!
