Bombardement 19 september 1944

The monument on the Rechtestraat reminds the residents of Eindhoven of the German bombing on September 19, 1944, in which 227 civilians were killed. Eindhoven was liberated by the Americans, who had landed on the Sonse heath by parachute or in a glider on 17 September 1944 as part of Operation 'Market Garden'. The next day the 506th regiment of the 101st Airborne Division reached the center of the city. In the evening tanks of the Irish Guards of the Second British Army also arrived. Slightly later than planned, because they were stopped by the occupying forces near Aalst. On September 19, about 70 German planes bombed the newly liberated city. Only after September 21 the battle line shifted to the north, and Eindhoven could really feel liberated.
