Stenen Poppen Klundert

The Stenen Poppen is a masonry dam from 1583 and is part of the Klundert fortifications. It is a remnant of the fortifications that were built by order of Willem van Oranje to a design by Adriaan van Alkmaar. The dam is part of the fortifications in Klundert and thus also of the Defense Line of Willemstad. The function of the masonry dam is to separate the water in the moat from the salt water or the strong flowing water of a large water feature: sea, lake or river, where a fortress can lie. The dam was provided with a pointed edge, the so-called donkey's back, with (monks or) dolls on top to make it practically impossible to cross the moat.
