Kunstwerk De Wachter

Artwork De Wachter (7), by artist Marius Boender, was built along the Hollandsch Diep on the spot where the dyke broke during the 1953 Flood Disaster. The monument was prompted by the completion of the dyke reinforcement in 2001. The artwork is a whopping eight meters high, pyramid-like clay mountain, covered with grass. You can climb the artwork via a path that winds its way across the artwork. Chances are that you will do this in the company of grazing sheep. The creation of the artwork was a challenge, because factors such as weight (not too heavy), weather resistance (rain and wind) and construction (not subsiding under pressure from visitors) had to be taken into account.
